About Our Postpartum Doulas

A Postpartum Doula is there to support and gently lead families through the postpartum phase of life. While they are experts in newborn care, their primary role is maternal care: mothering the new mother and nurturing the family unit as a whole.

A Postpartum Doula’s role is one that varies day to day based on your family’s changing needs. They act as a non-medical guide, companion, and knowledgeable resource for families navigating life postpartum—here are of a few ways a Postpartum Doula can support your family:

  • General maternal care and relief
  • General newborn care techniques and guidance
  • Advice on newborn sleeping, soothing and eating techniques
  • Guidance on umbilical cord and circumcision care
  • Lactation, breast-feeding and pumping support
  • Providing coping strategies and postpartum depression resources
  • Sibling attachment and family bonding practices

As to further support the new parents, you can also expect a Postpartum Doula to assist with:

  • General tidying and organizing around the home
  • Running occasional errands
  • Light meal preparation
  • Providing basic infant childcare—days or overnights— in order to allow parents time to rest or reconnect

A Postpartum Doulas can visit with your family just a handful of times after the birth of your baby or on an ongoing basis for up to six months. Postpartum Doulas are available for 4-12 hour shifts, for one or more days/nights per week. And as always, we work with only the best. ABC clients can rest assured that our Postpartum Doulas have been properly trained/certified through CAPPA: Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association or DONA International.
